Ten Gentiles Will Follow One Jew? (Sabbath)

March 10th, 2012

The second day of joyful Purim celebrations, known as “Shushan Purim,” coincided this year with the Preparation Day that comes around every week and gives us time to ready our souls and our households for a season of rest and restoration called the Sabbath. We hope you have had many reasons to celebrate God’s gracious deliverance in your lives during the two days of Purim, be it of personal, financial or any other nature. For the next 24 hours, though, we will quiet our souls before the Maker of the Universe and enter His rest with the purpose of becoming even closer to our Mighty God and more intimately conformed to His exalted image.

Sabbath Reflections:

As a former pastor who served in many different Christian denominations, I appreciate the haven of the weekly Sabbath in a truly personal way. For quite a few years I was driven, along with so many other sincere Christians, to convert the world to my own particular creed. At one point it was the creed of the Pentecostal and later Charismatic Church; at another time I subscribed to the faith of the United Methodist and then the Seventh-day Adventist denominations. I genuinely believed that by urging the unchurched to become part of the Christian Church in general or come and join my specific Christian denomination in particular, I was somehow fulfilling the great purpose of serving the God of the Bible.

The Great Protestant Reformation, the sparks of which began to ignite in the 13th and 14th centuries, and whose evangelistic fervor broke out in the 16th century CE, has given the Christendom a new powerful impetus to convert, baptize and disciple everybody in sight. Numerous Christian denominations that broke away from the tight control of their Mother Church were aflame with their newly-discovered enthusiasm to make the rest of the world subscribe to their respective creeds and confessions of faith.

Although some of the mainstream Christian denominations have somewhat “cooled off” in their obsession of swelling their ranks with the people in the street, many still labor quite persistently under the illusion that they are the chosen vessel of God for converting the entire world to the fold of Christendom. I dare say that just as their Roman Catholic Mother’s faith and mission, education and practice were based on false or erroneous interpretations of the Word of God, so does the evangelistic fervor of her daughters is founded on the same principles. Let us take a look at what the Bible has to say with respect to the world’s final conversion!

One of the most clear Messianic and eschatological [1] prophecies contained in the Bible is found in the 8th chapter of the Book of Zechariah. The entire chapter is dedicated to the joyful news of the world’ final acknowledgement of the One true and Living God: “Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Peoples shall yet come, inhabitants of many cities; The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, “Let us continue to go and pray before the LORD, and seek the LORD of hosts. I myself will go also.” Yes, many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.’” (Zech 8:20-22) – The all-capitalized word “LORD” is the covenantal Name of the God of Israel. One can also easily see that Jerusalem features quite prominently in the passage as well. But the greatest “stunner” is coming up next!

The prophet concludes this oracle with the following statement: “Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.”’”(v.23) - Did you catch that? Apparently God’s program of salvation presupposes the Gentile nations coming back to the Israel of God and learning from them how to walk with the LORD God of Israel!
This is a prophetic vision of what will be transpiring in the world just prior to the establishment of the Messianic Kingdom of God! What happened in this passage to the Church’s notion that she will convert everybody to her understanding of the Scriptures? It is null and void according to the Word of the One who neither lies nor errs in His statements!

Despite of the ceaselessly frenzied activities of the evangelistically-minded Christendom for the last two millennia, God’s Word has always served as a reliable and trustworthy compass showing all that are willing to see what lies in the future and who possesses the truth! The Church’s desperate attempts to make the entire world part of the pagan cult that worships the idol of Trinity, tramples on God’s immutable Law and persecutes His Chosen People are in direct contradiction to the truth of the Word of God and fly in the face of the One God of Jacob! We are happy that you are reflecting with us on these powerful truths of God’s Word!
May your Sabbath rest be truly restorative and may the Holy One of Israel bless you and keep you! Shalom and Amen!
